2-year-old survives 15-story fall from Silver Spring apartment building balcony

A 2-year-old boy fell off a 15th-floor balcony at an apartment building in Silver Spring, Maryland, on Thursday and miraculously survived.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded to the Enclave apartment building in the 11200 block of Oak Leaf Drive in White Oak for reports of a child falling.

The boy had fallen into an area with mulch and bushes below, and was transported to a hospital with a broken arm and “multiple internal injuries,” police said.

Lieutenant Rebecca Innocenti with Montgomery County police told WTOP it was “a chaotic scene” when officers responded to the scene.

“It was certainly scary for everyone, the family members,” she said. “I was able to speak with one family member who … was in disbelief and trying to go through his mind about what occurred, how it occurred, and just kept saying that he was thankful that the child was not seriously injured.”

She went up to the balcony where the child had fallen from and said she thought, “It’s quite incredible that this child did not suffer any life threatening injuries.”

Innocenti cautioned residents to not keep patio doors or low windows open even when the weather is nice, at the risk of a child falling through it.

“I think it’s a good reminder for all of us, especially with these summer months, we do have our balcony doors … open and our windows, that we have to be mindful of the little ones that might not realize the danger that lurks below,” she said.

Police said in a statement they are investigating how the boy fell, but no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

Below is the area where it happened:

Fentanyl seizures plummet as Trump administration shifts focus to immigration

WASHINGTON — Fentanyl seizures decreased by 39% during the first year of the second Trump administration after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shifted the Department of Homeland Security’s criminal investigations arm to conducting immigration enforcement, according to a report government investigators published Friday.  Agents with Homeland Security Investigations, a subagency of DHS’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement, reported an “all hands-on deck” environment toward immigration enforcement began in January 2025, according to the DHS Office of Inspector General report. “With ICE dedicating more staff hours to immigration investigations, staffing hours for fentanyl investigations declined,” the report said. The report found that the hours dedicated to fentanyl investigations for fiscal 2025 declined by more than 250,000 hours, or 31%, compared to fiscal 2024.
