The Bowie, Maryland, mother who was shot in the head by her romantic partner Thursday was holding the couple’s 2-month-old baby as they argued about school supplies, according to charging documents.
The woman was rushed into surgery and, as of Friday afternoon, remained in critical condition, police said.
Her partner, Kimball Hinton Jr., 41, has been charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and other firearm-related charges in connection with the shooting.
One of the couple’s six children, who were all in the house on Myrtle Avenue in Bowie when the shooting happened, called police at 4:16 p.m. Thursday and said her mother had just been shot by her father, the documents state. Hinton himself called police two minutes later, according to the documents, and admitted shooting her.

When police went to the home, they saw Hinton in the front yard.
“I shot her, the gun is in the mailbox,” Hinton told officers, according to charging documents.
Officers arrested him, then entered the home to find a woman lying on the floor of the master bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head.

Charging documents state Hinton waived his Miranda rights and told detectives what happened.
Hinton said he and his significant other had been arguing over the inability to provide back-to-school supplies for their six children. He told police she was sitting on their bed, holding their 2-month-old child during the dispute and that another child tried to intervene.
Despite telling police he had “every opportunity to leave the situation,” he returned to the bedroom and fired two rounds from his pistol. Hinton noticed she had been struck when she began making what he described as groaning noises, according to charging documents.
He told police he then went outside, put the gun in the mailbox, called 911 and waited for police to arrive.
Charging documents also state Hinton is prohibited from owning a firearm due to previous convictions, including an assault in 2009 and a weapons violation in 2008.
