Police ID man killed in Montgomery Co. crash

A man is dead and the other is seriously injured after a crash in Montgomery County, Maryland, early Monday.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. on Fairland Road near Cedar Creek Lane.

A van with two people inside of it overturned. Police said the driver of the van was ejected, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The van’s passenger, 37, has serious injuries.

The driver of the van was traveling west on Fairland Road approaching Serpentine Way and tried to pass a car in a no-passing zone, preliminary investigation found. The van struck the car, lost control, struck a curb and several trees, and rolled over, a Montgomery County police news release said.

Police identified the driver of the van as Edwin Marcial Bonilla Sanchez, 40, of Silver Spring. The driver of the car, Robentz Timogene, 21, of Silver Spring, was not hurt in the crash.

Detectives are investigating whether speed and alcohol contributed to the crash.

The WTOP Traffic Center reports Fairland Road reopened around 8:30 a.m. following a nearly seven-hour closure between Tamarack Road and Serpentine Way for a crash investigation.

WTOP’s Abigail Constantino contributed to this report.
