VRE cancels afternoon service for Train 313

STAFFORD, Va. — Virginia Railway Express canceled Tuesday evening’s Fredericksburg Train 313 out of Union Station.

The cancellation comes after a morning disruption.

Around 7:30 a.m., an unruly passenger allegedly made threats against other passengers and the train equipment, VRE and the Stafford Sheriff’s Department said.

“Numerous passengers observed his demeanor and heard his threats,” a news release said.

The rail service issued an alert around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday saying the Fredericksburg-bound Train 312 had stopped at Leeland Road “due to a police activity,” with a later train, 314, stalled behind it. All of the passengers had to be evacuated from the Train 312 and platform as K-9 bomb-sniffing dogs were called in to check out the train.

“In accordance with our safety and security protocols, the train went back to our maintenance and storage facility in Spotsylvania County for further inspection,” VRE said in a news release.

VRE Train 314 picked up more than 300 passengers from the train but arrived at Union Station 51 minutes late because of the service disruption.

No one was injured.

The man who allegedly made the threats was taken into custody.
