WASHINGTON — Motorists have been smiling more these days at the gas pump. Prices are more than a dollar a gallon below where they were a year ago, and Virginia gas prices are among the lowest in the nation.
On Jan. 13 of last year, AAA reported that the national average price for regular gas was $3.31 a gallon. Today, it’s $2.13. Prices have fallen a penny or more a day for more than 100 straight days.
Time.com reports that at least 19 states are averaging gas prices below $2 a gallon, including Alabama, Colorado, Missouri, South Carolina and Texas.
Virginia is not far off, with gas prices for regular averaging $2.05 a gallon. The average price in Maryland is $2.30; in the District, it’s $2.57, according to AAA.
Prices are so low these days, Time says, Hawaii is the only state in the nation where gas prices are averaging more than $3 a gallon.
Motorists could save about $75 billion on gas in 2014 compared with last year.
