Rangers’ Corey Seager is sidelined again by back spasms and has an MRI

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas Rangers All-Star shortstop Corey Seager was out of the lineup for a second straight game Sunday against the Houston Astros because of back spasms.

Manager Skip Schumaker said Seager had an MRI on Sunday morning to make sure it’s only back spasms that are causing the problem. He said after the Rangers’ 8-0 win that the results of the MRI weren’t yet available, but that Seager wouldn’t go with the team to Denver and would travel to Arlington to undergo further testing.

Schumaker said before the game that Seager had improved Sunday but still wasn’t feeling good enough to play.

“He was in here before I got here,” Schumaker said. “I got here early and he was here before me trying to get in the lineup.”

The 32-year-old Seager is in a career-worst 0-for-27 slump. He didn’t play Friday night in a 2-0 loss to the Astros, but Schumaker said it was a scheduled off day and Saturday morning was the first time he had experienced any back issues.

Seager is batting .179 with seven homers and 19 RBIs in 42 games this season.

Mariners’ Kade Anderson signs autographs, takes it all in before impressing in big league debut

SEATTLE (AP) — Well before Kade Anderson threw his first MLB pitch, the Seattle Mariners’ prized left-hander took some time to make a few fans’ days. The 22-year-old Anderson got done with his warmup routine on Saturday quicker than usual before his much-ballyhooed big league debut against the Chicago Cubs. So, rather than ignore the young fans who watched his bullpen session, Anderson did a little something out of the ordinary and scribbled his signature a handful of times before the Mariners beat the Cubs 5-4 in walk-off fashion. Growing up in Slidell, Louisiana, Anderson didn’t go to many major league games. But, Anderson used to hound LSU baseball players for autographs as a kid, so he was more than willing to lend a few minutes of his time. “That’s what it’s all about at the end of the day, to go out there and pitch for the fans,” Anderson said. “... You just got to give back to those kids.”
