Charity of the Month: Goodwill of Greater Washington

A caring and local nonprofit dedicated to transforming lives and communities through the power of education and employment.

Most people know Goodwill for its network of thrift stores and donation centers. However, by donating to Goodwill, those items that have outgrown your home fund jobs, job training, and educational services for people faced with barriers to employment.

In addition to its retail stores, Goodwill operates two adult charter high schools known as The Goodwill Excel Center. The schools are the only adult charter high schools in DC that offer adult students, who previously left school, the opportunity to return and earn their high school diploma, not a GED. Goodwill is also expanding its impact through an innovative affordable housing development in Arlington, VA, which will be the first of its kind in the country to combine a state-of-the-art retail store and donation center with 128 affordable family housing units and onsite childcare in a single location.

Additionally, Goodwill of Greater Washington provides extensive professional development and job training opportunities to its more than 1,200 team members, many of whom face significant barriers to employment and self-sufficiency.  These learning and development programs help employees grow professionally, whether they choose to build their careers at Goodwill or pursue opportunities elsewhere.

To help protect our planet, Goodwill of Greater Washington also operates a large sustainability center where it recycles plastic, glass, computers, books, and carboard, with an eye on textiles, helping to reduce waste and extend the life of donated materials.  Goodwill is committed to being a responsible steward of every donation, whether it can be sold, repurposed, or recycled. By uniting education, jobs, job training, housing stability, and environmental sustainability, Goodwill of Greater Washington helps individuals achieve financial independence and long-term security while also keeping millions of pounds of material out of local landfills.
