Car Review: Audi A7 quattro combines the best of the luxury sedan with a stylish hatchback

14 OF 14

The luxury sedan is typically a comfortable cruiser but the styling can be a bit bland. Audi has a different take on the normal luxury sedan.

The A7 is a stylish ride. Where many luxury sedans have a more squared back end, the Audi A7 slopes down and looks racy. The hatchback design adds a sportier look. It’s also a boon for added cargo space. I stuffed a weekend’s worth of gear for five with no hassle.

The interior is top notch with the Prestige package. Equipped with leather heated/ventilated seats that massage, I found it easy to knock out long stretches of driving in ultimate comfort.

The virtual cockpit has great graphics. In addition, you have a map in front of you instead of on the center console. The driving experience is quiet and comfortable, and the turbo V6 will be plenty of power for most drivers.

The Audi A7 is very happy as a long-distance eater, but proved a fun commuter car when the road opened up. The Quattro AWD system means the handling limits are high and you feel confident in the twisties.

Cost: Price starts at $68,000; as tested $83,240
MPG: 22 City/29 Highway. I managed 25.2 mpg of premium over 472 miles of mixed driving.
Safety: Audi pre sense will work at lower speeds to help avoid accidents. Audi pre sense rear will apply the brakes when in reverse to avoid others. The Top View camera system gives a 360-degree view of the car and surroundings. It also includes adaptive cruise control with stop/start and traffic assistance, Audi side assist and cross traffic alert.
Options: $8,300 Prestige package; $2,750 Driver Assistance package; $1,000 21-inch wheel package; $600 Cold Weather package; $595 Daytona Gray pearl effect paint
Things to know: The Audi A7 quattro is redesigned for 2019. The luxury hatchback has a more modern look and the interior has an upscale feel with the pricey Prestige package.

Pros:

    • Sportier look compared to a normal luxury sedan; it’s more of a coupe style
    • Extra cargo space with the hatchback design
    • Premium interior; comfortable seats make long drives seem shorter

Cons:

  • Rear hatch can be a tall reach for shorter people
  • Styling leads to less headroom in the back seat
  • Can be pricey when you add the options

School bus emergency? Fairfax County students have a plan to handle it

This story is part of WTOP’s 2026 Back to School coverage. The wheels on the bus will soon be going round and round again in Fairfax County, Virginia, and some of its young riders are learning what to do if there’s an emergency on the way to school. The annual Safety Patrol Training Camp, hosted by Fairfax County Public Schools' Office of Transportation Services, combined hands-on exercises with classroom lessons to teach students how to keep calm during emergencies on buses. The training can feel remarkably realistic, with overturned school buses on their side or completely upside down in the middle of the county bus depot. Other buses, right side up, fill with smoke that is water-based but mimics the intensity of a bus overheating.
