Collector favors pizza boxes over pies

WASHINGTON – One pizza-lover’s fandom is centered on something other than the cheese-covered dough thousands are enjoying this Super Bowl Sunday.

Scott Wiener tells CBS Sunday Morning it’s pizza boxes that catch his eye, rather than the pies themselves. His collection of pizza boxes is made up of about 750 versions from 50 different countries, he said.

“When you’re in a different country, you kind of expect, ‘Oh yeah, the money’s different. The language is different, different customs.’ But you don’t expect to look on the wall of a pizzeria and to see this bright yellow box with blue writing on it. Totally rocked me,” Wiener told CBS Sunday Morning.

Wiener said his collection includes a George Clooney look-alike, a puzzle and even a box that works with your tablet to create a video game.

Wiener’s love does extend beyond just pizza boxes, and he offers  organized New York City “pizza tours” on his website. He’s also penned a book, “Viva la Pizza!: The Art of the Pizza Box,” featuring items from his collection.
