UConn: running back McCombs ‘no longer with team’

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — University of Connecticut officials say running back Lyle McCombs is no longer on the football team and they’re not saying why, but he has had a string of off-the-field problems.

UConn announced Wednesday that the 22-year-old, 5-foot-8, red-shirt senior from Staten Island, New York, is off the team, but will finish school this summer and get his degree.

Coach Bob Diaco says being on the team is a privilege, and with that privilege come responsibilities and expectations. He didn’t elaborate.

McCombs is the fourth-leading rusher in UConn history with 2,681 yards. He led the team in rushing the past three seasons.

McCombs’ problems have included an on-campus fight in January, a 2012 breach of peace arrest and a 10-week suspension in 2011 after marijuana was found in his dorm room.
