Wide receiver matchups provide early highlights at Redskins Camp

RICHMOND, Va. — Day two of training camp is in the books and the temperature cooperated a bit today. The Redskins held their morning walkthrough followed by the afternoon practice, where you could start to see things pick up a bit. The one-on-one position drills have been fun to watch, especially with DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon going against Josh Norman and Bashaud Breeland.

Jay Gruden said the team will be in pads on Saturday for the first time, but there will be no live tackling this training camp. He said maybe the second and third teams might have a live session of two, but nothing for the starters.

Other notes from Friday:

– Pierre Garcon (along with DeSean Jackson) is in the final year of his contract. Garcon enters his fifth year in D.C. coming off a 72 catch, six touchdown season. With free agency looming, his mindset remains the same as it always has

“Every year is a contract year,” he said. “In the NFL you can get released anytime, so you have to always give it your best. The NFL is always judging you by what you’ve done lately not what you’ve done in the past.”

– Rookie wide receiver Josh Doctson is getting closer to getting on the field as he recovers from an Achilles injury. It could come Saturday or Monday.

– Linebacker Perry Riley Jr. was activated off the PUP list today and participated in some of the afternoon practice.

– Matt Jones has looked explosive early on as he assumes the number one running back position.  It’s tough to tell a lot since there is no live tackling and no pads as of now.

– Former Redskins General Manager Bobby Beathard was in attendance on Friday and watched practice with Bruce Allen.

– The crowd was noticeably more on day two and expect more on Saturday as they put on the pads for the first time.
