Amid Va. calls to resign, VA’s Shineski does so

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Less than one day after Virginia’s Democratic U.S. senators added their voices to the chorus seeking Eric Shineski’s (shin-SEHK’-ee’s) resignation, the embattled Veterans Affairs secretary has done just that.

Shinseki apologized in public and then resigned in the privacy of the White House on Friday. He was driven from office by a mushrooming scandal over the agency’s health care system that serves millions of the nation’s former warriors.

President Barack Obama said he accepted the resignation “with considerable regret.”

Thursday, Sens. Timothy M. Kaine and Mark R. Warner had joined the growing number of lawmakers calling for Shineski’s resignation.
