NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man convicted of killing one student and wounding four others at an off-campus party near Seton Hall University has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.

At his sentencing Friday in Newark, Nicholas Welch apologized to the family of Jessica Moore but said the shooting wasn’t his fault.

Moore, a 19-year-old sophomore honors student from Disputanta, Virginia, was killed at an off-campus house party in 2010.

Prosecutors have said Welch brawled with the party hosts after they wouldn’t let him in. They said he then went to a nearby friend’s home and got the gun he used in the shooting.

Welch was convicted in March of murder and attempted murder. Under terms of his sentence he will be eligible for parole in about 89 years.
