WASHINGTON — Under the cover of umbrellas and the somber spell of rain, dozens of people gathered to remember 22-year-old Deeniqua Dodds, a transgender woman who had died Wednesday after she was shot in Northeast D.C. on the Fourth of July.

The vigil for Dodds, who was also known as Dee Dee, took place in Northeast D.C., near her home. Friends and relatives described Dodds as a happy, fun-loving person who shouldn’t have died.

Dodds was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the 200 block of Division Avenue Northeast on July 4. After several days on life support, she was pronounced dead on July 13.

D.C. police are investigating her death as a homicide, but do not have a suspect or motive tied to this case, WTOP’s television news partner NBC Washington reports.
