WASHINGTON  —On Tuesday, Montgomery County police will open a new warrant turn-in facility at Montgomery County Detention Center in Rockville, Maryland.

Police said they hope the new facility will result in more wanted people turning themselves in a timely fashion.

“Many times it’s a lot more convenient for them to show up at a facility and turn themselves in,” said Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman.

Currently, if you have a warrant out against you or know one is coming, turning yourself in can involve a long wait in a police station lobby.

“Sometime that occurs during peak times when there aren’t officers free to respond quickly to a station,” Starks said.

The new facility will have all the necessary staff available so a person can come in and if the option is available, post bond and receive a court date.

People accused of less serious crimes, who don’t want to be taken in during a traffic stop or have officers visit their homes or jobs, are likely to use the facility, Starks said.

The facility will operate from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
