The NYC Comptroller Wants to Give You Free Sunscreen

Summer’s here, and you know what that means: Lather up on that sunscreen.

For New York City residents, the cost of preventing sunburn and skin cancer could soon be lower than ever.

The city’s comptroller, Scott Stringer, wants to install free sunscreen dispensers across the city, including at public parks, beaches, playgrounds and pools.

“Providing free sunscreen to City residents can protect our children and save lives, and we can do it at virtually no cost to the City,” Stringer said in a news release.

He cited Boston and Miami Beach as cities with comparable ventures.

It’s unclear what this program would look like or how much it would cost. It’s also not immediately clear what kind of sunscreen the program would feature. Stringer has SPF 30 in mind, consistent with dermatologist suggestions, The New York Times reports.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the best methods of sun protection besides wearing sunscreen include staying in the shade, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants (or a T-shirt/beach cover-up, as the heavier wear may not always be feasible), wearing a hat and wearing sunglasses.

The CDC recommends sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, and urges consumers to reapply after being in the water, sweating or drying off.
