Brewers’ Gomez (lower back) late scratch at Cubs

CHICAGO (AP) — Milwaukee leadoff hitter Carlos Gomez is a late scratch from Brewers’ lineup because of lower back tightness.

The center fielder was due back on the field at the Cubs on Saturday after serving a three-game suspension for his actions in a bench-clearing incident against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 20.

Gomez was in the original lineup, but manager Ron Roenicke was concerned because he still had some lingering issues with his back.

Roenicke says Gomez “is such a violent swinger and a player” that “if he’s a little hesitant, I don’t think it’s a good idea to put him out there.”

Gomez is hitting .290 with nine home runs and 21 RBIs.
