Backhoe strikes gas line in Gaithersburg, area evacuated

WASHINGTON – A natural gas leak in Gaithersburg, Maryland, caused residents to evacuate from their homes Monday.

A backhoe struck a gas line in the 9700 to 9800 block of Fields Road between Rio Boulevard, Washingtonian Boulevard and Crown Park Avenue. The area is closed and cordoned off, said Pete Piringer, spokesman for the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service.

The gas company has stopped the leak and fire fighters and the gas company checked the area.

No injuries have been reported.
