Metrobus crashes into tree in Silver Spring

WASHINGTON — A Metrobus with passengers on board collided into two trees near East-West Highway in Silver Spring Monday, causing traffic delays in the area.

A Metrobus crashed into two trees along along East-West Highway near Grubb Road around 4 p.m.

The driver sustained serious injuries and was in stable condition Monday afternoon, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. Initially, the injuries seemed life threatening, Stessel said.

There were about 10 passengers on the bus at the time of the crash, and they were evaluated for non-life threatening injuries, Stessel said.

Police said the bus was sharing the road with a pickup truck at the time of the crash.

Metro Transit police say that Montgomery County police issued four citations to the driver of the truck, and have deemed the driver of the bus as being not at fault.

Police have not yet said what caused the crash.

Traffic was being diverted around the crash and the highway was closed at Grubb Road, said Montgomery County Fire & Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer. All lanes reopened around 6:30 p.m.
