Bernier has sports hernia surgery

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jonathan Bernier has had sports hernia surgery and will be ready for the start of training camp.

Bernier missed five games in March due to the injury. He aggravated it April 3 against the Boston Bruins and had to miss the remainder of the season.

Bernier posted a 26-19-7 record in his first season with Toronto. He also had a 2.68 goals-against average and .923 save percentage.

The Maple Leafs also said defenseman Carl Gunnarsson had hip surgery and both he and forward Joffrey Lupul (knee meniscus surgery) will also be ready for training camp.
