Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey ejected for arguing

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays pitching coach Jim Hickey has been ejected for arguing a check-swing call on Baltimore slugger Adam Jones.

Jones checked his swing as Nelson Cruz was thrown out attempting to steal second base in the first inning Thursday night.

After Cruz was retired, first base umpire Alan Porter agreed with plate umpire Marty Foster’s call that Jones did check his swing in time. If the pitch had been called a strike, Jones would have struck out to end the inning.

Hickey argued the call and was tossed by Foster.

Jones fouled out leading off the second inning.
