Va. woman gets suspended sentence for baby’s death

DINWIDDIE, Va. (AP) — A Dinwiddie County woman whose newborn’s body was found in a toilet has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

Media outlets report that 22-year-old Devin Monique Small received a three-year suspended sentence after she entered her plea Wednesday in Dinwiddie Circuit Court.

Small had been charged with first-degree murder.

Police say Small gave birth to the infant in a toilet at her family’s home in the Sutherland area in September 2013. Deputies found the infant dead in the toilet.

An autopsy showed the infant drowned.

Small’s mother, 41-year-old Angela Small, also was charged with first-degree murder. Angela Small later died and the charge was dismissed in November 2013.
