WASHINGTON — More than a dozen Metro managers have been fired and more could be laid off in coming months.

In an internal memo sent Friday afternoon, General Manager Paul Wiedefeld told Metro employees that seven senior managers are among the 20 who are being fired.

More than one-third of the managers fired work on “the rail side of the house.”

Wiedefeld also laid off Metro’s head of procurement, after parts issues had dragged on that were dragging down railcar maintenance.

“I hope you will join me in respecting the privacy of these individuals, and note that I will not be commenting about individual employees,” Wiedefeld said in the memo.

Metro is still looking to cut more front office staff to focus more resources on service and safety.

Thursday, Metro announced major 24/7 track work that will cut service in stretches through at least next March.

The track work plan also means the system will close at midnight every day, including weekends, beginning in June.
