Man charged with murder in infant son’s death

HAYMARKET, Va. (AP) — Prince William County Police have charged a Haymarket man in the death of his 3-month-old son.

Officers arrested 28-year-old David Michael Schmidt on Thursday and charged him with murder and felony child abuse in the death of Rhys Schmidt. Police say David Michael Schmidt is being held without bond. It could not be determined if he has a lawyer

Schmidt called police to his home on Aug. 5 to report that his son was not breathing. Police say the infant was taken to a local hospital, where, authorities say, the baby was found to have injuries consistent with being shaken.

Rhys Schmidt died on Aug. 17.
