WASHINGTON — A 16-inch water main has been repaired after its break caused traffic delays through Wednesday afternoon.

The water main was fixed around 2 p.m. after it broke Wednesday morning in the 9100 block of Rockville Pike near Cedar Lane, just north of Walter Reed and the National Institutes of Health.

The break caused Rockville Pike lanes to be closed through the afternoon. By Wednesday afternoon all northbound lanes reopened and one southbound lane had traffic moving. All southbound lanes are expected to reopen later Wednesday night, said a Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission spokesperson.

Earlier in the day, Lynn Riggins, a spokeswoman for WSSC, told drivers to avoid the area.

At one point, more than 100 customers are without water.
