Child dies in Stafford County house fire

WASHINGTON — A child died in a house fire in Stafford County Monday.

Firefighters responded to the fire in a two-story, single family home in the Hartwood District at 2:19 p.m.

When they got on the scene, they learned a child was still in the home, but because of excessive heat, fire conditions and a structural collapse, firefighters could not rescue the child.

Once the fire was under control, firefighters located the child.

The child’s body was taken to the state medical examiner’s Office in Richmond for an autopsy, according to a news release from the fire department.

The sex, age and identity of the child have not been released.

The fire remains under investigation by the Stafford Fire Marshal’s Office and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
