WASHINGTON – Virginia transportation officials are pushing for a comprehensive transportation package that aims to cut back on gridlock in and around the Interstate 95 corridor in northern Virginia.

“This project will fund roadway, rail and multimodal improvements to eliminate some of the worst bottlenecks,” says Virginia Transportation Secretary Aubrey Layne.

Proposed projects include one that would extend the 95 Express Lanes south to Fredericksburg.

“One of the things that became apparent as we went through here is the importance of this corridor, not just to this region but to our nation,” says Layne.

Virginia is expected to apply for federal grants to help fund the project.
