WASHINGTON – The long-struggling Corcoran Gallery of Art announced Wednesday that its collection and art school would be absorbed by two other Washington institutions.
The National Gallery of Art plans to take over the art collection and the Corcoran College of Art and Design would become part of the George Washington University.
The university would operate the college and own the Corcoran building on 17th Street. The National Gallery of Art would exhibit portion of the collection within the building.
“The coalition among our three institutions will open important new possibilities for Washington, DC. The Corcoran’s great cultural, educational, and civic resources, which are at the heart of this city, will not only remain in Washington but will become stronger, more exciting, and more widely accessible,” an email message to Corcoran supporters says.
