WASHINGTON — A Montgomery County man who a jury found guilty of child sex abuse has been sentenced to 18 months in state detention with five years of probation.

Timothy Ballard, 48, taught voice lessons for nearly a decade in Gaithersburg, Md. In November, a jury found him guilty of sexually assaulting a then-12-year-old boy.

Before sentencing, Ballard’s attorney requested a new trial based on an email of witness testimony he says he didn’t receive from state investigators. Montgomery County Circuit Court Judge Michael Mason denied that request.
