Giant Food celebrating its 78th year

WASHINGTON — Giant Food is giving away free birthday cake at all 170 locations on Thursday, Feb. 6 in celebration of its 78th anniversary. Birthday celebrations and cake cutting will take place from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Nehemiah Meir Cohen and Samuel Lehrman founded Giant in 1936 at the corner of Georgia Avenue and Park Road. It was the first supermarket in Washington, D.C.

Today, the grocery chain remains prevalent in the District and its surrounding areas. The company employs approximately 22,000 employees and 159 of the stores contain full-service pharmacies.
