WASHINGTON – Maryland Rep. Donna Edwards is co-sponsoring a bill that would strip the Washington Redskins of its trademark, effectively forcing the team to change its name.

Edwards, a Democrat, represents the district that includes FedEx Field in Prince George’s County, where the Redskins play.

ABC7 reports Edwards is co-sponsoring the bill with Delegate Eni Faleomavaega, a Democrat and non-voting representative from American Samoa, who introduced the legislation.

“I think it’s well time,” Edwards said, according to ABC7. “I certainly understand where the Native American community is coming from.”

Faleomavaega’s bill has about 20 co-sponsors total, including D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat.

Team owner Dan Snyder has said he will not change the name.
