WASHINGTON – The Washington Redskins’ controversial name was the topic of conversation at a symposium on racial stereotypes in American sports sponsored by the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian — the same museum receiving funding from one of the voices in the debate, according to The Washington Post.

The Oneida Nation, a roughly 1,000-member tribe from upstate New York, has pledged $10 million over 10 years to the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian, according to The Washington Post.

The tribe — which has prospered in the casino and resort business — is holding a symposium about the Redskins’ nickname Monday at the same Washington hotel where the NFL is holding its fall meeting.
