More than 700 cars on display at Washington Auto Show

WASHINGTON — That new car smell has come to the Washington Convention Center for the 24th annual Washington Auto Show.

More than 700 new makes and models will be on display during the show, which starts Friday, Jan. 27 and ends Sunday, Feb. 5. The show features the latest innovations in concept vehicles.

The big trend for 2012 is fuel efficiency.

“What we see is fuel economy is a place where we absolutely have to be strong,” John McFarland, with GM, says. “Consumers are asking for better value — and value through better fuel economy, and getting more for their money.”

McFarland says new technology will be on display, as well. They are also looking for cars that are fun to drive and provide a little something extra. Say, for example, phones that sync with cars to play music and make calls.

“That’s an area that we are really excited about and that we are showcasing,” McFarland says. “You no longer have to take your eyes off the road and fiddle with the phone. It’s safer now, and more integrated.”

When it comes to texting, McFarland says, “Texting is an interesting one, and one that we are exploring because our first priority is safety.”

More than 42 manufacturers will have displays at the show, which draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, according to its website.

Tickets are on sale now, and cost $12 for adults and $5 for kids 6 to 12. Those under 5 years old get in free.
