Got milk? It’s National Chocolate Cake Day

WASHINGTON – National Chocolate Cake Day is upon us, and therefore we must celebrate all things related to cake and chocolate.

Let us explore the origins of this sweet and delicious day.

According to the Dover Post, chocolate cake was born in 1765 when a doctor, an Irish immigrant and a chocolate maker teamed up in an old mill. They converted the building into a chocolate factory where they ground up cocoa beans between huge millstones to make thick syrup. The liquid was poured into mold shaped like cakes, which were meant to be transformed into a beverage.

Many years later in the 1800s, an Austrian chef created a special dessert for a prince. He spread jam between two layers of chocolate dough and poured chocolate frosting over it. The chocolate cake was born.

The first chocolate cake mix wasn’t invented until the late 1920s by a company called O. Duff and Sons, says PunchBowl.com. In 1948, Pillsbury released the first instant cake mix.
