Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan Retires

(CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas) — Wisconsin men’s basketball head coach Bo Ryan announced on Tuesday he is retiring, effective immediately.

“After months of conversation with [Wisconsin athletic director] Barry Alvarez and his administrative staff, as well as my wife, Kelly, I have decided that now is the right time to step down from the head coaching position here at Wisconsin,” Ryan, 67, said in a statement Tuesday.

Associate head coach Greg Gard will step in as interim head coach.

For Ryan, the winningest coach in the school’s history with 364 wins, the decision to retire was “months in the making.” He had announced in June that he would retire at the end of this season.

“I brought this up to Barry back in April,” Ryan said. “He advised me to take some time to think it over and I appreciated that. But in recent weeks, I have come to the conclusion that now is the right time for me to retire and for Greg Gard to have the opportunity to coach the team for the remainder of the season. I discussed this with Barry and I appreciate him giving me the space to make this decision.”

During his time at Wisconsin, the Badgers made two Final Four appearances, including in 2015, when the team lost to Duke in the national championship game. So far this season, Wisconsin is 7-5.

After Tuesday’s win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Ryan spoke to reporters about his decision.

“It is so emotional right now, and I’m trying to hold this together,” he said.
