WASHINGTON – A 25-year-old Herndon, Va., man has been charged with texting while driving and other offenses after the vehicle he was driving struck a police officer conducting a traffic stop.

Citing witnesses, Manassas City Police say Officer Heather Munsterman was talking to the driver of a vehicle on Route 28 near Phoenix Drive Saturday morning when a black Ford driven by Alexander Bacon swerved off the road and struck both the officer and the vehicle she had stopped.

Munsterman is still recovering at Fairfax Hospital, but may be released to a rehab facility Monday.

She sustained fractures to her ankle and pelvic area, a dislocated shoulder and a concussion along with severe bruising across her entire body.

Police say Bacon, of Herndon, stopped after the incident. He faces charges that include texting while driving, reckless driving and driving on a suspended operator’s license.

Bacon was held on a $5,000 bond. A court date has been scheduled for September.
