Fairfax County volunteer arrested, charged with embezzlement

WASHINGTON – A volunteer for “Celebrate Fairfax” has been arrested and charged with embezzlement.

Varrie Butler, 25, of Chantilly was tending a cash box at one of the entrance gates to the event on Sunday, between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., when management became suspicious and contacted the Fairfax County police.

Police determined Butler had been allegedly taking money from people purchasing tickets and hanging on to it, rather than placing it in the cash box.

Butler cooperated with police and all of the money was recovered.

She is currently being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
