WASHINGTON — Dangerous, decaying trees on Md. 28 in Darnestown, Maryland, will be removed Wednesday, and the process will cause some road closures.

Crews will close one lane of traffic between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. during the removal process.

The two trees, a Kentucky coffee and a northern catalpa, are severely deteriorated. Sonal Sanghavi, the Maryland State Highway Administration’s Director of Environmental Design, says an arborist checked the trees to see if anything could be done to save them.

“Unfortunately, there is no other option,” she says. “The two trees are in their final stages of life and a storm or ice could easily bring them down onto the roadway and people below.”

SHA will replace the dying trees with new 3-inch plantings.

Wood from the old trees will be available to the public on a first come, first served basis at the Gaithersburg Maintenance Facility. Anyone interested in taking some of the lumber is asked to call 301-948-2477.
