WASHINGTON — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to increase taxes and cut spending on Tuesday, a move that will mean about a $200 increase per year for the average homeowner.

The hike is lower than the amount originally proposed by the county executive.

The new budget proposal cuts spending by county agencies more than $20 million and there will be no pay increases for county employees.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Sharon Bulova, a Democrat, says the tax increase and budget cuts are necessary to close a projected $169 million deficit created by decreased revenue in the slow economy.

Republican Supervisor John Cook, who also voted in favor of the tax increase, says it is a compromise and that inaction by Congress stifled the growth of county businesses that rely on federal government contracts.

Republican Pat Herrity was the the lone “no” in the 9-1 vote.
