How to prepare for local weather emergencies

WASHINGTON — September is Emergency Preparedness Month, and around the region, residents should take extra steps to make sure they’re ready for dangerous weather and other emergencies.

In years past, the region’s worst hurricanes and weather events have hit in September. In speaking with WTOP on Wednesday, Executive Director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency Russ Strickland offered these tips to make sure you’re prepared for these situations.

  1. Prepare an emergency kit.
  2. Determine your evacuation routes. What are the best ways to vacate your neighborhood if disaster strikes?
  3. Listen to local emergency managers to remain on top of possible incidents.
  4. Check to see if you live in a flood area.

To that end, check evacuation routes and flood areas when you go out of town. It’s important to be safe there, too.

What should be in your emergency kit
