WASHINGTON — A Prince William County man is facing weapons charges after he brought a loaded gun to a local airport earlier this week.

On Saturday, Transportation Security Administration officers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport stopped a Woodbridge, Virginia, man from bringing the gun onto a flight to Denver. The man was stopped at a security checkpoint with the gun, which was loaded with seven rounds, according to the TSA.

Security officers detected the gun with the X-ray machine at the checkpoint.

This marks the seventh gun the TSA has detected at DCA so far in 2015, compared to the 14 guns recovered in the airport in 2014.

Police arrested the man and confiscated the gun. He has been cited on weapons charges.

TSA is reminding travelers that guns and ammunition are not permitted in carry-on bags. Travelers who bring firearms to the checkpoint are subject to possible criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties from TSA of up to $11,000.

Passengers travel with guns packed in checked baggage if they are properly packaged and declared.
