Moped rider killed in Franconia crash

WASHINGTON — A man was killed on Monday night after a car crashed into his moped on Franconia Road in the Franconia section of Fairfax County.

Fairfax County police say that Peter Kester, 56, was riding his moped west in the center lane of and approaching Thornhill Court at about 9:30 p.m. when a 23-year-old woman driving a Toyota Camry, approaching Thornhill Court from the west, tried to make a U-turn and didn’t see Kester.

Kester tried to stop but hit the rear of the car. He was wearing a helmet and a reflective vest, but died on the scene.

The driver of the Toyota stayed at the scene, and detectives are continuing to investigate. They say neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.

Anyone who saw the crash is asked to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477) or the police at 703-691-2131.
