WASHINGTON — Water main break repairs in Silver Spring will affect traffic into Friday. A 16-inch water main break occurred on Colesville Road at Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring Wednesday afternoon, causing water to gush through the streets. The pipe was 76 years old. After 10 hours, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission crews shut off water because key valves were located under the water rushing from the break. WSSC’s contractor will cut out about 25 feet of pipe to replace it, says the agency’s spokeswoman Lyn Riggins. The repairs will continue into Friday, she adds. A specific time for the completion of repairs is not yet known. As of Thursday afternoon, there is one lane getting by on northbound Colesville Road, all southbound lanes of Colesville Road are open. Two lanes of southbound Georgia Avenue are open and all northbound lanes on Georgia Avenue are open. Approximately 5 million gallons of water were lost during the break. All customers have had water service restored as of Thursday.
