Practice runs begin at Silver Spring Transit Center

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Buses are expected to be rolling in and out of the long-delayed Silver Spring Transit Center on Monday.

While it is still too soon for riders to catch a bus at the $140 million depot, bus drivers are starting practice runs at the complex.

Drivers of out-of-service buses are beginning their training at the transit center — checking each turn radius, boarding locations and traffic patterns preparing to carry passengers to and from the center in downtown Silver Spring.

The facility is about $50 million over budget and four years behind schedule, after potential safety problems were uncovered, including cracked concrete.

The oval-shaped, three-level complex will link Metrorail, Marc Trains and Metro and RideOn buses.  The facility also includes a taxi stand and Kiss and Ride lot.

No date has been set for the facility’s opening, but Montgomery County is expected to hand the facility over to Metro soon.
