Man dies in crash involving downed tree

WASHINGTON – A 79-year-old man was killed in a Montgomery County crash Tuesday night involving a tree downed during severe weather.

Montgomery County Police said the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Darnestown and Cattail roads.

According to police, a preliminary investigation shows that a pickup truck was headed east on Darnestown Road at the time of the crash. The vehicle hit a tree that had fallen into the roadway during stormy weather earlier in the evening.

A Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman said it appeared that the vehicle then swerved and hit a pole, causing live electric wires to fall onto the top of the vehicle.

The driver, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was the only person in the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation.
