WASHINGTON – Pepco is reassuring customers who were accidentally over-charged that the utility is moving swiftly to fix the problem.

It is unclear how many people in the Northwood Park and Four Corners areas of Silver Spring received higher bills when Pepco replaced old meters with smart meters, Montgomery County Council president Roger Berliner says.

“They were literally paying $300 more for an estimated bill than they every paid in their lifetime,” he says.

Peco concedes the estimates were faulty and is cancelling the incorrect bills. Berliner says he hopes the issue can be quickly rectified.

In his weekly news briefing, Berliner looked past sky high gasoline prices and renewed his call on state lawmakers to allow Montgomery County to levy its own gas tax to pay for road projects.
