WASHINGTON — The 31-year-old Rockville, Maryland man who police say confessed to killing his next door neighbors, Richard and Julianne Vilardo, made an appearance in a courtroom in Juneau, Alaska, Tuesday.

Scott Tomaszewski has waived extradition and the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office says he’s likely to be returned to Maryland next week. Tomaszewski was arrested over the weekend while vacationing with his parents.

He faces five charges — two counts of murder, two counts of armed robbery and burglary.

The bodies of Richard, 65, and Julianne Vilardo, 67, were found on Mother’s Day at their Rockville home.

Tomaszewski faced a Tuesday afternoon bond and extradition hearing.

“He seemed very calm. He didn’t really have any notable facial expressions and when he was addressed he responded yes or no,” says Melissa Griffiths, a reporter for the Juneau Empire, who was inside the courtroom for the brief hearing.

Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy monitored the hearing by telephone.

Montgomery County Police say that when detectives questioned Tomaszewski this past weekend, he confessed to the killings and evidence collected includes bloodstained cash found in his wallet.

Montgomery County Police are expected to travel to Juneau to retrieved Tomaszewski who will face an arraignment in District Court in Rockville, following his return.
