WASHINGTON – The Washington metro area will commemorate the 11th anniversary of the nation’s worst terror attacks with several events.

• Prayer services at the Washington National Cathedral will be held at 8:45 a.m., noon and 5:30 p.m., but no large commemoration of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks will be held.

  The 5:30 service will be a choral service.

• At the Pentagon Memorial, there will be a private ceremony for survivors and their families. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is hosting the remembrance ceremony. The memorial will be closed to the public from 5 a.m. to noon.
• Arlington National Cemetery will be open. It holds a moment of silence at 9:37 a.m. Tuesday.
• At D.C.’s Freedom Plaza from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be an “afternoon of service.” The event hosted by Serve DC, the mayor’s office on volunteerism will feature emergency preparedness demonstrations. There will be music, art and mini service projects along Pennsylvania Avenue between 13th and 14th streets NW.
• Leesburg holds a remembrance ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Town Green, located at 25 W. Market Street.
