Md. officer put on leave after shooting a suspect

WASHINGTON – A District Heights police officer is on administrative leave after shooting a man wanted for stealing a motorcycle. The incident happened Thursday evening.

Kalvin Kyle had already been arrested when he tried to escape, officials say. Sgt. Johnnie Riley, an 8-year veteran, shot Kyle, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries to his back.

Upon his release, Kyle will be turned over to the Department of Corrections.

Riley has been put on leave in accordance with departmental policy. An internal investigation is pending.
