2 dead in Sunday afternoon motorcycle crash

WASHINGTON — A fiery motorcycle crash in Waldorf, Maryland has left the driver and his passenger dead.

Maryland State Police say 47-year-old Derek Anthony Colquitt of the District and 34-year-old Jeri Lenelle Whorton of White Plains were on the motorcycle.

Around 4 p.m. Sunday. Colquitt was driving a 2013 Harley southbound on U.S. Route 301 near Mattawoman-Beantown Road when he crashed into the back of a Dodge Ram.  The motorcycle then caught fire.

Colquitt died at the scene.  Whorton was airlifted to Prince George’s hospital where she died. Police say speed was a factor in this crash and that Whorton wasn’t wearing a DOT-approved helmet.

Colquitt was a bassist and manager for the prominent go-go group The Junkyard Band.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack at (301) 392-1200.
